QB’ers join province-wide Forest March on Friday, September 18

A Forest March will be held in communities across British Columbia on Friday, September 18, 2020 appealing for greater protection and better management of BC’s forests and forest economy. Several QB groups have joined with other regional organizations to host a rally in front of the offices of MLA Michelle Stilwell at 1209 Island Hwy E in Parksville on Friday, September 18 at 11 AM. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place, and attendance is limited. More information is available at Oceanside Alliance Forest March.

Tossing cigarette butts could cost you $575

With all the acrid smoke in the air coming from the wildfires in the United States, it’s a good time for people to be extra careful when handling potentially flammable substances of any kind. Don’t, under any circumstances, toss a cigarette butt from your vehicle. A smoldering butt can become a fire a few hours later.

The Motor Vehicles Act allows officers in BC to issue an $81 ticket for littering, including cigarette butts. If you are within one kilometre of a forest or a grassy area, you could be fined $575 under the BC Wildfire Act. This applies to any “mishandling of a burning substance,” not just the tossing of cigarette butts.
