We are fortunate to live in an area that offers fresh seafood. With the advent of summer, our thoughts turn to succulent spot prawns, the first of the wild Sockeye salmon, and fresh Dungeness crab.
We are also fortunate that Qualicum Beach is home to the Hub City Fish Market. This is the retail outlet of a federally licensed Vancouver Island commercial fish processor, offering fresh, local, sustainably caught seafood.
Hub City Fisheries Ltd. was founded in 1979 by a true Vancouver Islander. Roger Paquette, born and raised in Duncan BC, was driven by his passion for seafood and adoration for his coastal community. Roger’s mission was to share BC’s world-renowned seafood, locally and around the world, by cultivating strong integrated relationships with fishers, retailers and the public.
We’d say he succeeded. The company flourished, and quality remains a stalwart of the operation. Roger says he sometimes calls his job “air traffic controller” because he often deals directly with several hundred fishers, daily. Hub City Fisheries Ltd. has grown to over 200 employees, some of whom have been with the company for over 25 years.
Hub City Fish Market offers a wide range of fresh, frozen at sea, canned and specialty seafood products, including whole fish and professionally prepared fillets. Fresh, in-season crab and oysters are available alongside halibut cheeks, whole octopus and other delicacies. Careful sourcing of local seafood is evident, including suppliers such as Timothy Oysters from Ladysmith, BC.
Gift cards are available should you want to treat someone with a gift of fresh, local, sustainable seafood. Hub City Fish Market is a 10 minute drive from QB’s downtown, south on Memorial Avenue / Hwy 4.
